Die wichtigste Studie war die APRES-Studie:
APRES: The Appropriateness of Prescribing Antibiotics in Primary Health Care in Europe with Respect to Antibiotic Resistance; (EU FP7-HEALTH-2007; Partner)
Obwohl über 90 % aller Antibiotika in Europa in der Primärversorgung verschrieben werden, sind die Informationen über Verschreibungen und Resistenzmuster in der Bevölkerung derzeit unvollständig. Bislang wurden Informationen über die Prävalenz der Resistenz gegen antimikrobielle Mittel in Europa hauptsächlich aus invasiven Stämmen gewonnen, die in Krankenhäusern gesammelt wurden. Ziel der APRES-Studie war es, die Angemessenheit der Verschreibung von Antibiotika in der primären Gesundheitsversorgung in Europa zu untersuchen, indem die Muster der Antibiotikaresistenz und der Verschreibung von Antibiotika erfasst und kombiniert wurden. Außerdem wurde die Angemessenheit der nationalen Leitlinien für die Verschreibung von Antibiotika in Bezug auf die Resistenzmuster bewertet.

Im Rahmen der APRES-Studie wurde in Österreich auch das Wissen der Menschen über Antibiotika erfragt sowie der Grippe-Impfstatus im internationalen Vergleich.
Das Wissen der Bevölkerung im Jahr 2011 war ernüchternd niedrig.
Nur 28,1% beantworteten die Frage korrekt, ob Antibiotika wirksam gegen Viren sind (nein) und nur 32,9%, ob Antibiotika gegen Erkältungen und die Influenza wirkt (nein).
