The Department of Public Mental Health has been founded as part of the Center for Public Health in 2026. Public Mental Health is a relatively new discipline in Central Europe, emerging from the growing need for prevention strategies to strengthen mental health in various population settings.
Public Mental Health addresses the indicators, determinants, and strategies for promoting mental health, improving health literacy to support mental health promotion and reduce stigma. The prevention of mental illness is another key aspect.
The department’s research focuses particularly on suicide prevention, stigma research, mental health promotion, media effects research, stress research, and the study of deradicalization processes.
The Department of Mental Health contributes with its expertise in mental health and patient-physician communication to the Medical Curriculum Vienna and offers several elective courses.
The Medical Psychology Unit, with its specific teaching and research content, is integrated into the Department of Public Mental Health.
