Socioeconomic inequalities in morbidity and mortality are a major challenge for healthcare systems worldwide. To improve the understanding of the conditions that shape health inequalities through time, reliable, longitudinal and local micro data are a prerequisite. In the absence of administrative data, published obituaries are such an alternative source with a variety of markers for socioeconomic status included. Drawing on obituaries published in a regional newspaper, this study aims to estimate the development of socioeconomic inequalities in lifespan in Vorarlberg/Austria between 1946 and 1981.
